Dear colleagues,
A variety of GeoNet raw data (including GNSS, strong motion, camera images, tsunami monitoring gauges) are distributed via https://data.geonet.org.nz<https://data.geonet.org.nz/>.
On 17 of March 2026, we will move to a new back-end system that has a number of improved features and is faster and more reliable. If you or your automated workflows use this service, please read below as there are some upcoming changes that may affect the way you currently access data.
-----
For browser users
The homepage will look different (we think better!), and it will now provide an overview of the documentation, any upcoming changes, and so on.
For automated workflows
This upgrade is the first step to move https://data.geonet.org.nz<https://data.geonet.org.nz/> to a proper “Data API”.
Key changes that can potentially impact your programmatic access are:

  *
clients must follow a redirects: if your system is not set up for this, we recommend updating it as soon as possible, and before the 17 of March (for example, `curl` does not follow redirects by default);
  *
The new service introduces a new URL pattern (https://data.geonet.org.nz/v1/data/), but we are also providing a “backward compatible” API, that will be eventually deprecated;
  *
rate limiting is introduced: please ensure your code will not exceed it or implement logic to wait and retry the download if you hit the limit.

The figure attached shows an indicative timeline of changes and recommended actions.

Further details of those key changes and recommendations to migrate are available at https://github.com/GeoNet/help/blob/main/data-access-changes/data-geonet.md.

What you need to do before the switchover
Please make sure you update your code so that it will follow the redirects. You can safely introduce this change now, as it will work with current and future fileserver.
You can preview and test the new service at this temporary URL: https://gamma-data.geonet.org.nz<https://gamma-data.geonet.org.nz/>. On the switchover date, https://data.geonet.org.nz<https://data.geonet.org.nz/> will be served from this new backend.

Thanks for your attention and apologies for any cross-posting (and please help us sharing this with anyone you know that is using GeoNet data!).
