Dear Colleagues,
On May 17-21 2004 (Monday-Friday) a Joint Assembly
of the Canadian Geophysical Union and the American Geophysical Union will
be held in Montreal, Canada. This meeting affords a unique opportunity
for geodesists and geodynamicists to organize topical sessions focusing
on ocean - atmospheric modelling and observation, passive margin
tectonics and strain accumulation, continental margin triple junction
tectonics, post glacial rebound (monitored by prehistoric, historic and
contemporary space-based data), ocean load tide response, earth rotation,
fundamental problems in geodetic sciences, monitoring of ice sheets and of
the cryosphere and hydrosphere, in general, strike-slip and thrust surface
motions, and time-dependence of the gravity field, InSAR observations
of volcanic systems, and a host of other geophysical problems with which
the Canadian, American and world communities find much in common.
In recent years geodesy at the Spring AGU has faced growing competition
from the General Assembly of the EGS in Nice, France. However, the CGU-AGU
Joint Meeting of 1992 was very well attended. This can be attributed
(in no small part) to the charm, uniqueness and beauty of the city of
Montreal. We expect a good showing, not only by attendees from
the US and Canada, but also from Asia, Europe, Latin America and
elsewhere in the world.
We would like to solicit at this time ideas for sessions
at the Joint Assembly. It may be a meeting which is especially timely for
reporting results from CHAMP, GRACE, IceSat and other missions. Analysis of
future missions might also be proposed.
There are just a few days more than a month to propose special sessions
for this meeting. The deadline is Sept. 24, 2003. Please give us a short (one
or two paragraph) description with a proposed title at least several days
prior to this date.
