The U.S. Naval Observatory has an opening for a U.S. citizen to head the
Time Transfer Division of the Time Service Department.

A degree in mathematics is not required.  It is expected that people who are
primarily engineers, physicists, or other specializations would be eligible
if they have adequate knowledge of the mathematics involved in the
timekeeping art.

Applicants who are employed by the U.S. government should follow the
instructions in the announcement below.  It is anticipated that the position
will soon be opened to all U.S. citizens.

About Us:  The U. S. Naval Observatory Time Service maintains the time
standard for the Department of Defense.  It is made up of over 70 atomic
clocks in Washington and 15 atomic clocks in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  We
also develop new kinds of precise clocks and provide accurate time to users
around the world. 

About the Job:  Supervise 6-employee Time Transfer Division, which provides
the time from the Master Clock to users such as GPS.  GPS satellites are
directly monitored, and the timing data are used to control the GPS time
scale.  The Division also maintains a national network of Internet time
servers, and operates the Departmental computers.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:  Requires knowledge of mathematical
analyses, precise timekeeping, timing of radionavigation systems, timing
receivers for radionavigation data reception, timekeeping electronic
hardware,  and timekeeping data analysis.  Demonstrated engineering and
physics ability would be useful.  Computer skills should include C and
Fortran, with Unix a plus. U.S. Citizenship required.  Secret or Top Secret
clearance to be required.
