A hard-coded firmware GPS end-of-week rollover related date resulted in erroneous dates for recorded observation files for this date onwards. As there had been no further firmware updates for this vintage receiver (continuously operating since 2001, initially as UNB1), we have had to retire it as the UNBJ station receiver. We have replaced it with a Topcon (TPS) Net-G3, also a geriatric receiver but one we had on hand and which was more or less compatible with our UNBJ recording and processing set-up. We resumed sending hourly and daily RINEX files to CDDIS and SOPAC on 16 January 2025. From a multi-GNSS perspective, this firmware offers important new features: * QZSS L1 C/B signal tracking: starting with QZS-6 launched in February this year, all future QZSS satellites will not transmit an L1 C/A signal anymore but switch to L1 C/B. Please note that also no L2 signal will be transmitted anymore. * Support of QZSS PRNs J08-J10: QZS-6 will use J08 and signal transmission is expected to start soon. QZS-5 and QZS-7 using the other two PRNs are expected to be launched at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, respectively. * NavIC L1 tracking: starting with the NavIC satellite NVS-01 launched in May 2023, an L1 signal is transmitted in addition to L5 and S band. Since late December, there has been a significant westward displacement of the IGS site ADIS, approaching ~20 mm so far, which is caused by a large volcanic intrusion that is more than 100 km distant. The westward displacement appears to be detectable by around 20 December, but became much larger around 24 December. This corresponds to a rapid lengthening of the dike intrusion, which has now reached about 50 km in length and extends between Fentale and Dofen volcanoes. Data for this mostly comes from InSAR, and you can see some beautiful interferograms in the reports at the link below. Juliet Biggs at the University of Bristol noted ?We've been putting together a series of event response reports through the crisis, which you might be interested in: https://comet.nerc.ac.uk/publications/event-response-reports/. The intrusion seems to have ended for now, but we never know if there will be another phase.? The larger displacement corresponds to a particular phase in the event, which they describe in their January 14th report, and show in Figure 2f,g of that report. ?Between 24th and 29th December, there was a change in direction, accompanied by an acceleration in dyke propagation. The dyke tip propagated about 24 km in 5 days (Fig 2f,g) and reached the neighbouring volcano Dofen, 47 km to the north of Fentale. The latest information (from satellite image cross-correlation) shows that the rupture length for this earthquake was about 500 km, which is exceptionally long for an event of this magnitude, and this length is well outside of the usual scaling relationships. It is a remarkably long rupture, in fact, and one of the longest single fault strike-slip rupture ever, perhaps even the longest yet observed that did not involve multiple distinct faults. This also means that the width (in depth) of the rupture was probably lower than normal in the scaling relationships as well. And as a result, prediction error is likely to be larger than usual ? although because all of the IGS sites are quite distant the displacements will likely be small, as predicted by the IGS-RF calculation. But if you see a larger-then-normal difference between the IGS-RF prediction and what you observe, it is a consequence of the unusual nature of the earthquake. The most recent version of the USGS finite fault model (version 3) includes information from one satellite image correlation data set, but not yet the SAR image correlation or InSAR (data covering part of the fault are now available as of yesterday).
