Dear colleagues,
The International GNSS Service (IGS) relies on a diverse and evolving ecosystem of data formats, processing systems, and user communities.
As data volumes grow and new technologies emerge, there is a clear need to modernize and harmonize our underlying data architecture.
We are excited to announce the launch of the Data Architecture Pilot Project and invite you to contribute your expertise to shaping the future of IGS data systems.
About the Project
This pilot project aims to develop and validate a modern, interoperable data architecture framework that standardizes, future-proofs, and streamlines the use of GNSS data across systems and communities. Our goal is to ensure that the IGS remains at the forefront of scientific and operational excellence while enabling broader accessibility and innovation.
Core Objectives
Improve Interoperability: Establish standardized GNSS data models and interfaces for seamless integration between tools, services, and analysis centers.
Modernize Data Formats: Evaluate and evolve existing formats (e.g., RINEX, SINEX, SP3) for better extensibility, efficiency, and machine readability.
Facilitate Automation & Scalability: Enable robust, automated workflows to support increasing data volumes and real-time applications.
Enhance Data Quality: Define consistent validation mechanisms and quality metrics for improved reliability and traceability.
Enable Cross-Domain Integration: Promote compatibility with external systems (e.g., Earth observation, geodesy, climate science).
Encourage Innovation: Lower barriers to experimentation and support emerging technologies.
Who Should Participate?
Participation is open to all IGS Associate Members (AMs). We encourage broad representation from:
Analysis Centers and Data Centers
Infrastructure and Station Providers
Data Architects
User Communities, Observers, and External Domain Experts
The project will be led by two Co-Chairs (who will serve as ex-officio, voting members of the IGS Governing Board).
Technical work will be driven by agile, ad hoc Task Forces dedicated to specific technical challenges and deliverables.
Expected Outcomes
By participating, you will help directly deliver:
A reference architecture for IGS data systems.
Recommendations for the modernization of key data formats.
Prototypes and validation of interoperable workflows.
Guidelines for data quality, validation, and metadata standards.
A roadmap for long-term adoption and implementation within the IGS.
