Dear Geodesy Colleagues,
Thank you to the 400 participants who joined us last Thursday to discuss the findings of the State of Geodesy 2026 report.
We greatly enjoyed hearing the perspectives of five leaders in global geodesy, which was followed by a lively discussion. The session addressed geodesy’s critical role in enabling modern digital infrastructure and economic development, the fragility of the global geodesy supply chain (GGSC) infrastructure (particularly its under-representation in the Southern Hemisphere), and the pressing need for formal governance to ensure a sustainable and robust GGSC.
During the interactive question-and-answer segment, participants highlighted that goodwill and the status quo alone cannot maintain or modernize critical geodetic infrastructure, and that regional gaps in infrastructure or capacity can quickly become global vulnerabilities. It was also noted how the UN-GGCE’s actions are assisting Member States in increasing awareness and visibility of geodesy to decision-makers and beneficiaries.
Due to time constraints, we were unable to address all the questions live. However, the Subcommittee on Geodesy will use these valuable submissions to guide the in-person discussions taking place on the margins of the UN-GGIM Committee of Experts meeting this August.
We strongly encourage you to stay engaged in these vital geodesy discussions through your Member State's Head of Delegation to the UN-GGIM Committee of Experts, or by participating as an observer. Please note that those wishing to attend the Sixteenth Session (GGIM-16) as an observer have until 10 July to register via the following link: Observer Registration Form<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSePDZ8cVnSe9ojxjrgWc9KSMg8TPnHCZo70M5wYg4YSdEmShg/viewform>.
