Dear IGS community,

From 1 December 2020, all incoming RINEX v.2 files received by IGS global data centres will be decompressed and published using the gzip compression algorithm. The transition will be postponed due to some issues with the IGS MAIL list (not all of you received this message).

Example:

xxxx0010.20d.Z -> xxxx0010.20d.gz

This is the implementation from the attached "IGS IC Recommendation 2018-04” proposed by Ryan Ruddick, Michael Moore and Nacho Romero that has been discussed at the IGS Workshop in Wuhan. The Addendum on compression of RINEX 2.11 files has been approved by the RINEX WG and has been published on the IGS webpage.

https://kb.igs.org/hc/article_attachments/360063352932/Addendum_rinex211.pdf

All global IGS data centres have agreed on the date and will implement the change from 1 December 2020.

Station operators are encouraged to use gzip as the preferred format for submission of RINEX 2.11 files from that date onwards.

Please update your data retrieval routines accordingly to support the gzip compression.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

Ryan Ruddick and Markus Bradke
