Dear colleagues,
On 2019-07-06 at ~0315 UTC, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck in the California desert near the town of Ridgecrest. This earthquake caused a displacement of IGS14 frame station GOL2 by several centimeters. GOL2 is typically used as a fiducial station in our rapid products. Due to fiducializing to the outdated frame solution, our rapid products from 2019-07-06 through 2019-07-14 yielded defective point positions across large areas of the western United States, inducing spurious displacements in PPP of up to ~1.2 cm primarily in the west direction as far away as Colorado.
At ~2300 UTC on 2019-07-16, we replaced our Rapid products for 2019-07-07 through 2019-07-14 with updated solutions which did not fiducialize to GOL2. . Updated rapid products were uploaded to IGS and BKG.
If you have point positions with JPL rapids from these dates, we strongly recommend reprocessing them either with the updated Rapids or with Finals when they become available.
JPL final products were unaffected since they use a constraint-based approach which removed GOL2 from the frame automatically.
Regards,
Paul Ries
On behalf of the JPL IGS analysis center team
