Meeting Announcement: EGU 2008, Splinter Meeting to Discuss "Continuous
GPS at Tide Gauge Sites"
Room : SM3
Date and Time : Thursday 17th April 12:00 - 13:30
Currently there are on the order of 130 continuous GPS at GLOSS stations
and a further 150 sites
that have been identified as being with 1000 m of a tide gauge. However,
for various reasons,
around a quarter or these are not freely available to the GLOSS or IGS
scientific community.
The benefits of developing a globally distributed subset of
high-precision geo-located GLOSS
stations that are available to the scientific community have been
documented on numerous occasions.
Therefore at the 10th session of the Group Experts for the Global Sea
Level Observing System
(GLOSS GE X) in June 2007 there was a recommendation to "Devise an
implementation strategy to
install and maintain CGPS receivers at 50-100 GLOSS network stations,
identify an appropriate
funding agency, and submit a proposal on behalf of GLOSS by the next GE
meeting".
This meeting aims to bring together interested members of the scientific
community present
at the EGU meeting and provide an opportunity to discuss the issues
related to a coordinated
effort to enhance the GPS infrastructure at GLOSS stations. In
particular the meeting aims
to engage in a discussion regarding the development of a proposal that
we can start to
circulate amongst potential funding agencies. Depending on time there
may also be an
opportunity to develop a specific set of stations for GPS upgrades and
the design of
a robust station configuration that can be installed in a variety of
settings
