mathematics is not necessarily required. As indicated in the
official advertisement, it is expected that people who are primarily
engineers, physicists, or other specializations may be eligible if
they have adequate knowledge of the mathematics involved in the
timekeeping art.

For technical information about the position contact Dr. Demetrios
Matsakis by telephone at (202) 762-1587, or by email at

About Us: We maintain the USNO Master Clock, which is the official time
standard for the Department of Defense and includes over 70 component
atomic clocks in Washington and 15 atomic clocks in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. We also develop new kinds of precise clocks and provide
accurate time to users around the world.

About the Job: Supervise the six-employee Time Transfer Division, which
transfers the time from the Master Clock to users such as GPS. GPS
satellites are directly monitored, and the timing data are used for
controlling the GPS time scale. The Division also maintains a national
network of Internet time servers, monitors Loran transmissions, and
manages the departmental computers.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Requires knowledge of mathematical
analyses, precise timekeeping, timing of radionavigation systems, timing
receivers for radionavigation data reception, timekeeping electronic
hardware, and timekeeping data analysis. Demonstrated engineering and
physics ability would be useful. Computer skills should include C and
Fortran, with Unix a plus. U.S. Citizenship required.
