announcement.

Gjovik University College (HiG) in Norway has two faculties: the Faculty
for
Technology at Gjovik and Brandbu, and the Faculty for Health located at
Gjovik and Lillehammer. The College offers courses in engineering,
forestry
and health, as well as a number of further education courses. Geomatics
is
one of the areas where the College is expanding its activities. The
College
Administration is located in Gjovik. Gjovik University College has
approximately 190 staff, and has capacity for a total of 1392 students.
In addition to its primary educational role, the College is active in
research
and development, further adult education and re-education, remote
learning,
project work on behalf of clients, and internationalisation.
Gjovik is situated centrally in South-East Norway, 130 kms north of
Oslo,
and within easy reach of the mountains. Gjovik itself, with a population
of
some 27000, offers rich culture, a wide range of educational facilities
at
all levels and more reasonable living costs when compared with the main
cities. The Mjosa inland sea and the surrounding countryside provide
plentiful opportunities for outdoor activities.
SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
GEOMATICS
GjF8vik University College invites applications for a Doctorate
Scholarship in
Geomatics commencing 1st January 2002. The Geomatics Group currently
consists
of 8 members of staff, including one Doctor and one Doctor Candidate.
The
Group is strongly active with technical research and development and
with
external activities.
Candidates will be expected to work on Geomatic technology, with the
following
preferred areas of focus:
+ Generation and publication of geographic information, cooperating
with the
College's Digital Media Group.
+ Use of high precision real time satellite positioning systems for
geographic data capture - operational procedures, data flow, standards,
communications systems, accuracy and reliability.
+ Multi-disciplinary infrastructures within the field of Geomatics with
a
view to their management and development to the benefit of society at
large,
especially as the Geomatics professions adjust to increasing numbers of
international standards.
+ Increased environmental needs and constraints for land use and
resource
employment leading to the demand for improved geographic databases. The
challenge is to develop effective techniques for data capture and
analysis
to support forthcoming growing requirements.
The successful candidate will be required to seek, with the College's
support, external candidate status at a University or other institute
empowered to award doctorate level degrees. This external institute will
supervise the candidate's work jointly with a qualified member of the
College
staff. The candidate will be located for the majority of the Scholarship
period at Gjovik. The Scholarship period is for 4 years, and the
successful
applicant is thereby committed to use 25% of his/her working time on
other
educational matters within the Geomatics Group.
Gjovik University College offers good working conditions and a strongly
active
environment able to give technical support and guidance.
Appointment to this Scholarship will be in accordance with current
regulations
and agreements for state employees. The appointment will draw a salary
in
accordance with "lF8nnsplan 17.515, kode 1017, LR 22, ltr 34-39".
Pension
contributions of 2% of salary are withdrawn at source. The successful
candidate
will be bound by such laws, rules and regulations that apply for the
duration
of the appointment.
