Subject: Malindi communication problems

After the decommissioning of the dedicated Cluster/Italsat 
Malindi-ESOC link, we have experienced several problems with 
the data retrieval using a modem running over the PSTN. 
Communications were not possible from 02/09/96 (DOY 246/96), 
when the dial up modem at Malindi stopped answering remote calls. 
On 17/09/96, after several changes in the line set up, the 
communications have been resumed. Unfortunately the receiver 
did not track any data since the lost of the link on 02/09/96. 
The collected data of DOY 261/96 have been retrieved and 
distributed to the data centres.

We are working trying to guarantee the regular availability of the 
Malindi data. A new modem will be shipped today to Malindi and
new procedures will be tried for the case that the modem stops 
answering calls again.
