Subject: SIO Analysis Center Results (7 August, 1992)
--------------------------------------------
SIO Analysis Center Results (7 August, 1992)
Yehuda Bock, Peng Fang and Keith Stark
This week we include the following information:
(1) Update on availability of SIO orbits
(2) SIO computed cCoseismic displacements at California sites due to
Landers/Big Bear earthquakes (28 June 1992)
(3) Updated coordinates from the first 51 days of IGS analysis
Polar motion results for 25-31 July.
(1) Availability of SIO orbits
The analysis center at SIO has been archiving GPS orbits since
14 August 1991, and maintaining them on-line for access via
anonymous ftp. To access the Scripps PGGA/GARNER archive:
Use anonymous ftp
address: teddy.ucsd.edu (132.239.13.4)
Login: anonymous
Password: your name
Precise GPS orbits can be found under garner_orbits and are
stored by year (e.g. 92data).
The orbits are in NGS Precise Ephemeris Format (Standard Product 1).
The naming convention differs from the IGS one and is as follows:
ngarnyy.ddd (e.g. ngarn92.150)
This week we have renamed all our orbit files according to
the IGS convention. They can be found in igs_products/gps_week
The orbits can also be accessed according to our old naming
convention described above.
In addition, we have copied all orbit files since GPS week 649 to CDDIS.
They can be found in gps3:[products.week] (e.g. gps3:[products.0649].
We also plan to archive the IGS products of the other analysis centers,
under igs_products/gps_week
(2) Coseismic displacements
We have analyzed absolute coseismic displacements of the PGGA and
DSN sites in California from our daily SIO IGS solutions. The
displacements are computed from three weeks of solutions prior to
the earthquake, the day of the earthquake split into pre- and post-
earthquake solutions, and three weeks after the earthquake. These
displacements are from a fully rigorous global solution that
incorporates the SIO polar motion estimates over this period.
Site North East Up
post-pre (mm) (mm) (mm)
PINB-PIN1 43.4 +- 1.2 15.4 +- 2.4 -9.4 +- 5.6
JPLB-JPL1 3.6 +- 1.5 -11.0 +- 2.3 -25.9 +- 5.5
DS1B-DS10 -15.9 +- 1.4 -3.2 +- 2.4 -21.0 +- 6.7
SIOC-SIO2 11.7 +- 1.6 10.3 +- 3.0 -20.1 +- 6.9
The formal errors should be scaled by a factor of 2 in order to
obtain realistic one-sigma estimates, according to the fit to
the adjustment of all the data. In addition, the scaled numbers agree
well with baseline repeatability over the three week period
before the earthquake and the three week period after the
earthquake. The horizontal displacements closely agree in
direction with those predicted by a variable-slip dislocation model,
while the magnitude of the observed displacements is uniformly about
70% of the model displacements. We do not consider the vertical motion
to be significant because of the higher scatter in our vertical
determinations. The hypothesis of no vertical motion should
be preferred.
(3) Updated coordinates and polar motion results.
The new set of coordinates described below is based on the
analysis of the of the first 51 days of the IGS campaign, and
include a new set of coordinates after the Landers earthquake.
The polar motion results are for the period 25-31 July.
1. Analysis Center: Scripps Institute of Oceanography
2. Solution Identifier: Submission 920807
3. Software used: GAMIT/GLOBK
4. Definition of Terrestrial Reference Frame:
Origin: Nominally ITRF-90
Orientation: Nominally ITRF-90
Reference epoch: 1992.57 (MJD 48829.5)
Relativity Scale: Terrestrial
Velocity of light: 299792458.0 m/sec
Permanent tidal correction: None
5. Adjusted parameters:
(a) Double-difference data
(b) Single day orbit arcs, 6 ICs and 3 radiation parameters per
satellite-per-day
(c) One-per-day-per-station zenith tropospheric parameter,
(d) Bias parameters, one for each independent double difference
combination.
(e) Station positions with +- 10 m constraints at stations other
than: ALGO, YELL, PIN1, PINB, JPL1, JPLB, SIO1, SIO2, FAIR, KOKR,
USUD, DS10, DS1B, DS40, DS41, DS60, YAR1, MCMU, TAIW, ONSA, WTZ1,
METS, MATE, TROM, NALL, KOSG. For these stations constraints of
+0.001 m for horiziontal and +-0.005 m for the height were used.
(f) X and Y pole position once per day. (No estimate is made of UT1-
AT since these deviations are absorbed into the orbital parameters).
(g) On MJD 48800.5, the California sites are treated as separate
sites before and after the Landers earthquake.

NOTES:
(a) Those sites without a DOMES point number are at unknown locations,
and those sites with a (?) in the Alternate descriptions possibly have
an incorrect DOMES number.
(b) The epoch refers to the epoch at which the site position applies
and not the mid-point of the data span. We have also added the
velocities adopted for these sites at the end of each line. For most sites
these are the NUVEL-1 velocities with the North American AM0-2 velocity
added. For PIN1 and DS10, Observed velocities (based on a combined VLBI/
GPS solution using ~10 years of data have been used).
(c) The PEQ notation in the site name (PINB, DS1B, SIOC and JPLB) denotes
post-Landers earthquake position (applicable after 11:58 UTC June 28, 1992.
(d) These coordinates were estimated from the first 51 days of IGS data.
They have been rotated and translated into the ITRF 1990 frame by use
of the horizontal coordinates at all sites. The rms difference between
the horizontal coordinates of these sites and our previous realization
(second IERS submission) was 5 mm).
(e) The outlier in our polar motion result for day 192 (10 July) has
been resolved and the current table reflects this.

Last weekend, blockII satellites were operated with AS on (no p-code
available). Most Rogue sites handled the switchover just fine (taking
1.5-2.5 minutes to re-acquire satellites and produce tracking records).
A few sites had problems:
HERS (Hersmonceaux) did not track as many points as usual. Running
Meenix 7.0, but an older version? Also, the operators of HERS have
always used TRK format, which is not ideal. Do we have a contact for them?
GOLD (Goldstone)
MADR (Madrid) did not track AS. May have been upgraded this week. TIDB
tracked fine with newer software.
TAIW (Taiwan) did not track as many points as usual. Much older version
of software (5.6.1). Do we have a contact for them?
USUDA did not track AS. Older version of software (5.6.1).
Note that during the AS period, ephemerides were not available for
blockII satellites. The ephemerides are missing from the raw data
files, and Tom Meehan says that he noticed them missing for TurboRogue
also. Seems that the DOD did not broadcast them?
