Today, the so-called space weather is of growing relevance in politics and science. Since modern society is highly dependent on space-based technology (e.g., communication and navigation systems), methods for monitoring space weather are being developed worldwide. Of particular importance is the description and prediction of the state of the ionosphere, which has a large impact on the propagation of satellite signals. The analysis of space-geodetic observation data that are influenced by the ionosphere (e.g., GNSS, satellite altimetry, radio occultations) allows for determining different ionosphere parameters, such as the electron density or the vertical total electron content (VTEC).
The combination of various satellite missions improves the data distribution and warrants the estimation of parameters at higher accuracy and resolution. Additional consideration of solar observations (coronal mass ejections, flares, solar wind) enables the development of operational systems, which react on irregular solar influences and enhance the description and prediction of the dynamic state of the ionosphere accordingly. Such a system shall be realized in the framework of the project OPTIMAP (Operational Tool for Ionospheric Mapping And Prediction).
