<div>A short statement from the GFZ side regarding your points:</div>

<div>1) GFZ can send the files in any compression, so we can start pushing them whenever they are needed.</div>
<div>2) We would not prefer to change the history for the moment either, since it will affect the synchronisation for all of us (as you mentioned). If we change the files, it will affect the size and the checksum as well, which is our criteria to distinguish whether to collect a file or not.</div>
<div>3) I’m personally not aware of any projects where the Z compression is requested. But I certainly can imagine, that there’s old software around that can handle only this specific RINEX v.2 naming convention.</div>

<p>2) Do we change all the historical files to .gz ? This will generate "new files" which the myriad of sync processes (private and public) running between all sort of servers will cause a lot of duplications ... I propose we leave the old files as they are for now to avoid a lot of potential duplication of files in IGS and user's servers<br /></p>
<p>3) are you aware of specific places were the .Z compression is requested? required? recommended? ... I think the site guidelines are generic enough, what do you think?<br /></p>

<p>We have some other recommendations to discuss with you in the next few days, and in the next months I will organize a telecon so we can all agree a way forward for each one.</p>
